Opening a Trade Account with a UK Tissue Manufacturer: What to Expect
Share
Buying tissue direct from a manufacturer rather than through a cash and carry or janitorial distributor removes a margin layer and shortens the supply chain. The barrier for most businesses is not eligibility, it is not knowing what the process involves. Here is what to expect.
What a trade account actually gives you
Three things change when you move from retail or distributor buying to a direct trade account.
- Tier pricing. You are quoted against volume rather than paying a fixed list price, and the rate improves as your ordering grows.
- Pallet and part pallet delivery. Stock arrives at your premises rather than being collected.
- Specification support. You can ask for the right product for your dispensers and your application rather than picking from what happens to be on a shelf.
Who qualifies
Trade accounts are for businesses buying in commercial quantities. In practice that covers a wide range of UK operations:
- Independent grocers, convenience stores and discount retailers.
- Cash and carry operators and wholesalers.
- Restaurants, pubs, hotels and catering groups.
- Care homes and healthcare providers.
- Schools, academies and multi academy trusts.
- Contract cleaning companies and facilities management providers.
- Offices and multi site employers buying their own washroom supplies.
You do not need to be large. A single site restaurant or a 40 bed care home usually gets through enough volume across washroom tissue and back of house paper to make direct supply worthwhile.
What you will be asked for
Nothing unusual, but having it ready shortens the process considerably:
- Registered business name and trading name if they differ.
- Company number for limited companies, or confirmation of sole trader or partnership status.
- VAT number if registered.
- Delivery address, including access details. This matters more than people expect. Whether you have a loading bay, whether a full size vehicle can reach you, and whether you need a tail lift all affect how the order is fulfilled.
- A named contact for orders and one for invoices, if they are different people.
The one question worth preparing for
You will be asked what you currently use and how much. If you can answer that precisely, you get a better specification and a better price immediately. If you cannot, the first quote will be a guess and you will spend a cycle correcting it.
Before applying, spend twenty minutes gathering:
- Your dispenser core sizes, per our dispenser compatibility guide.
- Roughly what you get through in a month, using the method in our stock planning guide.
- Whether you need food contact white roll as well as general cleaning blue roll.
- Your storage capacity, which determines whether full pallets or split deliveries suit you.
Delivery and payment
Most trade orders ship on pallets. Confirm at the outset whether your site can receive one, because the alternative arrangements are easy to organise in advance and awkward to sort out on the day.
Payment terms vary by account. New accounts commonly start on payment with order and move to credit terms once a trading history exists. This is standard across the industry and is not a reflection on the business applying.
Private label as a next step
Retailers and larger operators buying at volume sometimes find that own brand becomes viable sooner than they assumed. If that is a direction you are considering, our guide to launching a private label tissue brand covers minimum quantities and timelines, and we take enquiries through our private label page.
