Toilet Roll Dispenser Compatibility: Which Rolls Fit Tork, Katrin and Lotus

Ordering a pallet of toilet roll and discovering it will not fit the dispensers already bolted to the wall is one of the most expensive mistakes in UK facilities procurement. It is also one of the easiest to avoid. This guide explains how dispenser compatibility actually works, which core sizes the major brands use, and how to specify with confidence.

Compatibility comes down to three measurements

Most buyers assume dispenser fit is complicated. It is not. Three numbers decide whether a roll will work in a given unit.

1. Core diameter

This is the internal cardboard tube, and it is the number that causes the most failed deliveries. UK commercial washrooms run on three sizes: 60mm, 76mm and 90mm. A 60mm core will spin loosely or jam on a 76mm spindle, and a 76mm core simply will not push onto a 90mm one. Our guide to toilet roll core sizes covers the measurement detail.

2. Roll diameter

The outside width of the roll determines whether the dispenser door will close. A 400m jumbo has a noticeably larger outer diameter than a 300m roll on the same core. Estates that upgrade from 300m to 400m for the refill labour saving sometimes find the existing housings will not shut.

3. Roll width

Standard UK jumbo and mini jumbo rolls sit around 90mm to 100mm wide. This is rarely a problem, but imported stock occasionally deviates and will not seat correctly.

What the major dispenser brands use

Brand naming is inconsistent across the market, so always verify against the physical unit rather than the catalogue name. As a general guide for UK estates:

• Tork M-series typically takes mini jumbo rolls on a 76mm core.
• Tork jumbo units commonly run 76mm, with some legacy models on 60mm.
• Katrin jumbo and mini jumbo housings are widely 76mm.
• Lotus and equivalent commercial units are usually 76mm.
• Unbranded and budget UK dispensers are very often 60mm, which is why 60mm remains the highest volume core in independent retail and small offices.
• Industrial and high traffic housings occasionally run 90mm spindles for maximum capacity.

How to specify without guessing

Before placing a pallet order, do this once and record it:

1. Take a used core from each dispenser type on site and measure the internal diameter with a ruler. It will be close to 60, 76 or 90mm.
2. Count how many dispensers of each type you have. Mixed estates are normal, especially after acquisitions or refurbishments.
3. Note whether each unit is jumbo or mini jumbo. Mini jumbo housings are visibly smaller and will not accept a 300m or 400m roll.
4. Order against that count rather than a single blanket specification.

Mixed estates: standardise or split the order

If you have inherited three different dispenser types across a site, you have two options. Split the order and hold separate stock for each, which is simple but ties up storage and increases the risk of the wrong roll reaching the wrong cupboard. Or replace the odd dispensers out and standardise on one core size, which costs money once and saves handling every month afterwards.

For most multi site operators, standardising pays back inside a year. The saving is not in the paper, it is in the reduced picking errors and the simpler reorder.
